Ceviche

I had never had Peruvian food, as such. But on eating at Ceviche in Soho, I had certainly had eaten very similar things before, so I’m not quite sure how authentically Peruvian their dishes are, or whether I eat a bit of Peruvian food on a regular basis without knowing it.

For a snack as you browse through the menu, these little broad beans croquets with mint, coriander and yogurt are tasty and not greasy as some deep-fried things can be.

As their restaurant name suggests, ceviche is a must-have dish. Their signature ceviche dish is pretty good. Think fresh and tangy and light. The presentation is a little haphazard. Usually I have had ceviche served like carpaccio – in a flat circular arrangement, which looks stylish. This was heaped in a bowl.

Other dishes included the chicken wings which were yum – chilli, soy and honey (hmmm Peruvian?), pork ribs which were a little dry and lamb cutlets in a chilli marinade, which were juicy and flavoursome.

I tried beef heart for the first time. Me no likey the texture. Chewy, not like those meltingly soft chicken hearts…

The cocktails sure do pack a punch at Ceviche. I was systematically working my way through the entire list – I think I almost got there. The drink I had on arrival, the Eceuntro Amrago (pictured at the top) was bold and not too sweet; the pineapple worked really well with the pisco. Although the others at the table were not fans, I rather enjoyed the passionfruit number – possibly mainly due to the half passionfruit in the drink. I’m starved of tropical fruit in London. Sigh.

Overall, the food was mostly fine, but unfortunately Ceviche didn’t float my boat as much as I would have liked. There was nothing crotch-grabingly-good. Unfortunately, I left with an ungrabbed crotch.
