Cumulus Inc. has been one of the hottest places in Melbourne town since its opening in 2008. Having been there once before it was lovely to revisit it last Sunday morning after a gorgeous, lazy morning where one does not leave bed until the afternoon starts creeping in. Alas though, that was the only downfall of rocking up to Cumulus at about 11.45am; breakfast was over. My yolk-coloured dreams of poached eggs and breakfasty goodness were obliterated before my eyes.
The place is full to the brim, so we are relegated to a standing room only corner and we order some coffees whilst we wait. The coffee is awesome; rich, creamy, unapologetic. The coffee is what sealed the deal on our staying and not going in search of eggs.
After nearly a cup of coffee and some great theological discussion, we are seated at the bar, facing the open kitchen. The lunch menu is decidedly lunchy, and requires one to have done more than slink out of bed before eating, so we order a plate of madeleines after my eyeing them off at a near by table. We want more coffee.
“Can I please get a large latte?” asks my friend.
“We don’t do large. I can get you a strong latte.” says the condescending waitress with steely blue eyes.
“No, I like it how it is, I just want more of it.”
“Well, I can bring you one, then you can have another, and another.” So unnecessarily stern. Drop the attitude please.
Our coffees come, eventually, and the divine plate of freshly baked Madeleines with a lemon curd centre. They are scrumptious. They are warm and soft and the zing of the lemon is like a little can-can for your mouth. Delightful! I must have another plate full before I leave Melbourne.
