Saké, Melbourne Opening

I was fortunate enough to dine at Saké on its Opening Night. It was so lovely to be in a sparkly new venue, right on the banks of the Yarra, which looks ok in the dark!
The staff made us feel very welcome and I only hope this incredible level of service continues and wasn’t just a special for opening.

Edamame: always amazing. These are so satusfying in their simplicity.

photo of Japanese salad

Always a favourite: Chirashi Salad is yuzu-dressed sashimi pieces, crunchy salad mix, thin noodles, sliced sushi omlette and flying fish roe, topped with daikon tsuma and tempura crunch. In short, it is a big bowl of texture and flavour. Yes!

Miso-cream Scallops. The succulence of the scallops would win anyone’s heart.

The sashimi at Saké is always top notch. I adore the texture of sashimi, and the coulours. Beautful.

Tonkatsu Cups: when fried pork belly is involved, it’s going to be delicious. Order these!

So, I was ravenous as I’d just done a show, and Mum and Clare were also ravenous as they’d just watched the show, we needed to order something a bit heavier to sate our bellies. The Wagyu Teriyaki served on shiitake and buckwheat with yakiniku sauce was moutherwateringly good. I could have eaten the entire thing. The flesh just fell apart in your mouth. Drool.

Dessert was a chocolate fondant with sesame ice-cream. The centre oozed out like lava. Decadence at its best.

photo of yuzu tart

Clare enjoyed the yuzu tart for dessert. Its delicate, yet zingy flavour is a treat for your tastebuds, as it lightly dances across them.

Overall, my only criticism of Saké is that for a bill near $300, we hadn’t actually eaten that much. It is expensive! But if you want Japanese cuisine at its finest, then go as soon as you’ve saved up!
