The search for the perfect chip is never ending. Chips will always be a part of life, well certainly my life, and there is always a want to find the ultimate chip. What makes the ultimate chip? I feel this is somewhat a contentious issue as we all have personal preferences. There are those who like a thin, crunchy chip. There are those who like a soft, pillowy chip. There are those who like uniform, pristine looking chips. There are those who like them chunky and rustic. There are those who like that oily taste, and there are those who shun it. For me, the ultimate chip has been found. It lives at the Newtown Hotel – which since its renovations is a hub of activity and good times.
It was first discovered one late summer’s afternoon as some of us gathered for a cold beer and a chin wag. Inevitably, we got a little hungry so ordered some chips. Out came these mammoth, rough, woodsman looking chips with aioli and rosemary. They. Were. Unbelievably. Good. These chips are so beautiful in their rusticity; uneven, skin-on, rosemary-flecked, crunchy outside, soft inside, salty, golden pillars of joy.
I have been back several times for these chips, and Mum who has been eating chips far longer than I, agrees with me, that these are the best chips around.
If you know of awesome chips, please share… Don’t hog all the good food for yourself!
