After a disappointing loaf of sourdough from Sol Breads, and my longing for Bourke St Bakery growing exponentially, my faith in non-Sydney sourdough was restored with a trip to Le Bon Choix in Paddington. With its ultra French, chic aesthetic, Le Bon Choix is filled with typical French delights from pastries and macarons through to baguettes.
I left with a bag of goodies to try at home: a sourdough baguette, an apple danish and a salted caramel macaron. They did not make it all the way home. The macaron proved the perfect treat with my next coffee. Its texture was lovely and chewy like all good macarons should be.
The danish was devoured as a mid-afternoon snack; sweet apple slices and rich crème pâtissière, although the pastry wasn’t as flaky and as crunchy as it could have been due to transporting in a closed paper bag.
But the bread was outstanding. A proper bread; crunchy and tough outside with a substantial inside. The sourdough flavour was strong too. Paul Hollywood would approve. The only problem was, a certain character, who claims they don’t really eat bread, caught wind of this amazing baguette and helped themselves to some, maiming and demolishing half of it before I even started. Outrageous.
It was of such calibre that it needn’t be adulterated with fanciful fillings, simply spread on the butter and eat.
