Malaysian food is something I rarely have, not because I don’t like it, but because it is always hiding in the shadows, being bullied by that showy brat, Thai food. Satay Ria, is another one of Brisbane’s suburban gems. Situated in a mundane Cannon Hill shopping centre car park, Satay Ria is a haven of good fare and friendly service. It also has those three initials we all long to see, BYO. Obviously it is a favourite with the locals, however, if you’re not local, it is certainly worth the commute.
I order the Roti Curry with lamb. It is brash and full of heat and punch and soft hunks of lamb. The roti is amazingly crisp and light. The combination of such textures and weights, is a delight for the senses.
Dessert is a surprise. Kuih Ketayap is shredded coconut wrapped in a pandan flavoured pancake, served with ice-cream. This is utterly delicious. The colour is vibrant and the flavours are subtle and everything just works so well together. This is the dessert you must order. Be warned though, the non-dessert eaters will take one taste and eat half of yours. Boo.
