Dip & Flip

Although only my second burger in London, the cheeseburger from Dip & Flip in Battersea is simply outstanding. I am already calling it the best burger in London. Boom. Done. Competition over. The scary thing is, it’s walking distance from my house. I am not sure having such a place so close is helpful. It’s on my walk to work too, calling me to come and feast on its wicked delights. Oh the temptation!

Yesterday, at lunchtime, Dip & Flip is empty, and I have the whole place to myself, which on the one hand is good because I can chat to fellow Aussie Adam about the history of Dip & Flip, but this place should be packed as it is so very worthy of queues around the block (unlike a certain burger joint I went to today). Having been established for almost a year, Dip & Flip certainly has a solid local following and gets busy at dinner time, however, people need to start coming from all over London to get elbow deep in their burgers.

Why is it so good? Look at her: slightly lop-sided and imperfect. When you bite in, the juices pour like torrential rain, leaving your chin dripping. Amazing. The flavour is superb, combining all of my must-have elements for a burger to win my heart: grease, char and smoke. There is also an added bonus, the dip part of the restaurant’s title is reflective of the dish of gravy you get to dip the burger into. Apparently this is a thing in France, or was at some point in her culinary history, and it is good, but I’m a burger purist, so I don’t get too side-tracked with this novelty.

The patty flashes you almost embarrassing shades of pink inside, and the meat is perfectly seasoned. The slaw works well and there is plenty of that adored pickle zing.

The chips, and they are certainly chips, not fries as the recommender of this venue calls them, pack an herbacious punch and are useful vessels to soak up all that gravy.

Being Australian, I can appreciate the Cherry Ripe shake that’s on the menu, combining (in case you are so unprivileged as to have never had a Cherry Ripe) chocolate cherry and coconut. Winner.

Not only is this the best burger in London, but it makes the list of my top 5 burgers of all time, and joins the likes of Stitch (Sydney), Press* (Adelaide), Burger Theory (Adelaide), and Butty’s Food Truck (Perth).

I’m in love.
