The Grey Horse

Sometimes you get your nails done by a surly woman who ironically works at a salon called Happy Nails… and sometimes while you’re at said merry salon with sullen manicurist, your eye catches a blackboard outside a nondescript looking pub across the road, which reads “Winner Ribstock UK Short Beef Ribs”… You light up. For those who don’t know, Ribstock is a festival of all things ribby and if you win that, its a huge accolade, and it means your ribs are damn fine.

I filed this information in my head and then pulled it out this sunny Saturday afternoon as my Partner in Crime and I were on a bit of a shopping bender, having bought half of Majestic Wine Cellars after tasting pretty much the entirety of Majestic’s gins, wines and rums… Lugging our bottle-filled trolley behind us, we entered The Grey Horse for an award winning ribbing.

The dining room in The Grey Horse is lovely and open with high, sky-lighted ceilings. A very pleasant room to be in. We order the beef short rib and get talked into ordering the pork too. My Partner in Crime loves pork so much, so it didn’t take much convincing. I like pork, but I am a beef girl through and through.

Arriving with lovely pickles and fries, theses ribs are outstanding. The flesh is succulent and flakes away from the bone with ease. There is plenty of flavour and stickiness in the marinades and the subtlety of the housemate pickles marry in beautifully. The pickled celery is especially delicious.

Staff at The Grey Horse are friendly and its obvious to see the passion behind the food, drink and ethos of the place.

Coming in at £20, this fed two slightly tipsy hungry hippos, which for London is quite the bargain.
